Is there any 1st person RPG games that ARE NOT:

1. Post apocalyptic
2. Medieval
3. Brown

I want a Fallout 3 type game where I can explore, hunt with my rifle, wander around and find quests and things to do, but I don't want any of the three above things. RDR is kind of close but it lacks enough RPG elements and is a console game.

Alpha Protocol, Mass Effect - neither offer all that much freedom when it comes to wander and explore, though. To be fair, it's kind of hard to come up with a scenario for sandbox-style freeroaming with a weapon around that isn't set in some kind of lawless time.

Also, STALKER is not an RPG. You can roleplay in any game if you wish, even Call of Duty if you want. STALKER gives you a little more freedom than most games, but it's still not an RPG.

subquests are kinda shit, though. Not really focused on rifles and guns. But you can wander around, find things to do in various aesthetically pleasing settings and it's not post-apocalyptic.

I personally find it to be more of an RPG than many games that get that title without question. Still I can see the other side of the argument.

Trust me, RPGs and Open-World games are by far my favorite genres. With these few series you can play for thousands of hours. That's one of the reasone why I like these type of games so much. They have so much more content than other genres.

I didn't mean to be silly. A videogame about hunting animals with a rifle in a non-post apocalyptic , non-medieval, non-brown rpg already exists and I make it a point to experience roughing it every few months. Its fun, keeps you in shape, and just being surrounded by nature with just you, your friends, your rifle, and whatever you can fit on your back have created some of my favorite experiences of my life.

It just doesn't translate well into vidya. So either play more fun fantasy rpgs or have fun exploring. Either works but its fun to switch it up.

Also, most RPGs in 1st person (Ultima Underworld etc.) are traditionally set in classic fantasy themes - I don't know why. I could sure love me some RPG playing in the 1930s or so..

Because STALKER lets you affect the world around you.

Levelling isn't required by an RPG, progression is. Levelling is just one type of progression. In STALKER you progress by changing the world around you, as well as picking up better items, and modding said items.

Personally, I don't consider Final Fantasy an RPG either. I'll call it that for convention's sake, jRPG is the term everyone uses and I won't go around saying "technically it's an action-adventure turn-based game!" or whatever. But RPGs, at least for me, are games that allow you to customize at least to an extent the way your character acts and how he influences what happens in the world around him. I know computer RPGs will always be limited on this, but even games like Mass Effect, which often only gives you one option with different tones to your character, can apply. Sure, other games are more in-depth RPGs - in Fallout 1 and 2, for example, there are quests which can be solved in many ways, from violence towards either part involved, to cloak and daggery, to diplomacy, or however the fuck you manage. But STALKER doesn't give you enough choice on this matter to apply, at least in my opinion - sure, you customize what weapons and armor you use, you can side with 2 different factions or remain neutral, you can get some 7 different endings, but I don't think that's enough. Same can be said of most jRPGs.

But to answer your question better, OP. If you want a game where you can go out and hunt and shit, you're gonna have to suck it up and get Red Dead Redemption. To make it even better, get Undead Nightmare too. RDR is a fucking wonderful game.

I've actually got 2 copies in my desk. One is mine the other my roomate's. I've played maybe 10 hours and want to finish but haven't been able to get back into it. Quality PC gaming has ruined me and I find games like RDR and GTA4 so fucking fuzzy on a console. =(

STALKER's environment is so dynamic that much of the choice that is lacking in its quest are instead present in the world. CoP also incorporated a lot more "choice" in the quests and how the game plays out than the first STALKER. It depends on which one you talk about, but I personally feel that STALKER (both of them) does an incredibly good job at letting the player express his character in his surroundings.

You're not roleplaying Mario because he's a set role. To roleplay as Mario you'd have to know read the script, learn the character and then play out Mario as he would have. We don't have this luxury in computer games like we do in theatre, so that's why roleplaying games usually give you a blank slate and let you improvise your character. That way you already know what character it is, because you choose how he's gonna be. There needs to be mechanics to support this, of course. Mario doesn't have the mechanics to express character to much extent.

I'd consider STALKER a post-apocalyptic game, even if it's only the Zone that is fucked up. The world that concerns the player is in a post-apocalyptic setting, after all. The fall of society, rules and laws, violence, mostly abandoned urban areas and so on.

Speaking of which, am I the only one who finds STALKER to be too crowded? I think the game would feel more atmospheric if there were less people.

A game needs stats to be an RPG. Games that contain role playing elements, but have the players skill directly effect the character's skill are "Action-Role Playing Games". Some ARPGS are Deus Ex, Elder Scrolls and Mass Effect.

A game like Fallout 1 is a pure RPG (CRPG) in that every action a player's character does is controlled by the character's skill points, not the reflexes of the player.

There's nothing wrong with Action-RPGS, they're just a different style. CRPGs are the closest to DnD which is the basis for the entire RPG genre.

Any game where you play a character can be considered an RPG. But when people specifically ask for one, you can kinda imagine what they're looking for. I personally didn't find Stalker to be RPGish. RPGs have traditionally been influenced by stats and such, but they're not necessary. We're only used to it because the genre started based on D&D which DOES require that to work, but you could have an RPG with no stats at all, otherwise pretty much any game is an RPG, in which case it's not even worth mentioning since it refers to everything and you might as well say "video game" instead.

Just to clear things up, I've been saying STALKER isn't an RPG for a while now even though I'm a huge STALKER fan. You can play it as if it was an RPG, but the same can be said of most games, so that's not enough. It has some RPG elements, but it's not an RPG. FF = character driven story with stat progression and equipment acquisition
Diablo= Dungeon crawler with stat progression and equipment acquisition

Neither of these have any roleplaying. Your characters and what they do is set in stone from the beginning no matter which way you customize them. Pokemon is hard to categorize but it doesn't have any roleplaying either.

Really, a hunting game is the closest you're going to come and there's only a few out there with personal stats and strict inventory. Your best bet is digging around for them in the original Xbox library.

Just because you play a preset role doesn't mean its true roleplaying. Hence why I said videogames cannot be defined as RPG because everything is already predetermined. No they're not.

Just because you assume a role of someone in a game doesn't make it an RPG.

Games like Shin Megami Tensei and Baldur's Gate and many other famous franchises are RPGs because there's character progression and actual stats that go up as you become more powerful.

In STALKER the only thing that gets more powerful is your guns. Your character stays the same. There's no EXP. There's no stats (except on guns.) Being good at Stalker is what makes you good in the game. In virtually all RPGs it's the character you control who gets stronger. not you.

At the beginning RPG meant a Stat driven game. It had nothing to do with actual Roleplaying. It was derived from pnp Roleplaying games but limitations on hardware meant that storylines were generally quite linear and so emphasis was placed on character customization in order to allow the player to play through how he prefers. as technology improved other generas of game started borrowing RPG's defining feature of stats and customization creating several hybrid generas. many traditional RPGs turned out to better fit these hybrid generas and so pure RPG became so diluted that it started being used to encompass all of the hybrids derivitave of it which today means every other game. RPG is implyed in almost every genera today so it is only mentioned today if it contains a significant departure from its other half.

I have a gameboy emulator with Tetris on my hacked PSP Just crossed the 200,000 point mark a few days ago. So many nights have I lied down for bed and decided to play a quick game of Tetris which ended up going on for 5 hours or until my battery died.
