Beside the chakras other common stages or hurdles that the consciousness will overcome are resolution of good and evil, racism, etc. Depends on the group you start with and your personal feelings.
Theoretically there can be an infinite number of shared realms higher than the 7th chakras (I've also heard these called epiphanies), they involve the realization of some great and profound truth. The two essential ones, though, are the first and last. The first being the realization of much of what OP is talking about cosmically as true. The euphoria associated with this could lead the individual to experience multiple epiphanies there after, which the individual would be quick to share with those around them. But the final epiphany is really important, because that is the one where the individual realizes that they are not the first to have realized this and in fact our universe is long dead and we are simply reliving it.
I should also say (and I'm fuzzy about this part), but this chakra/epiphany traversing endeavor is carried out between individuals as well as internally. These two processes often occur simultaneous to one another, but sometimes they are stacked like sedimentary rock.
