Bottles, bottles everywhere – were they covered with red and blue labels? I didn’t know, it was hazy that night. I looked to my left, nothing but bottles, same as when I looked to the right. When I looked forward however, I saw the faint outline of a man.

I looked around my room, a small bedroom in a small house in the middle of Birmingham. The walls were cream but the paint was peeling in places, showing the dirt behind it. “I really need to clean that” I thought as I made my way to the shower. Recently we had a new shower fitted, because the old one was clogged up with all the rust that had gathered on it over the years. The bathroom itself was no larger than 4 meters squared, with a toilet, a sink and a shower crammed in the small space. I opened the shower, and looked at the shower head. “That’s weird, I thought to myself – it’s already dirty, and we’ve only had it for 2 weeks”.

After the shower, I went downstairs to see mum, who was eating breakfast at the family table. The kitchen was basic, with a few cupboards and an oven for basic cooking. We couldn’t afford a new microwave, as the old one broke, so all our cooking had to be on the hobs or in the oven. “Why is the shower so dirty?” I asked. Mum didn’t reply, I didn’t get much out of her these days. “Ok then, I’m off”, I said as I got my bags and left for school.

School was uneventful, as ever, and on this Friday morning, everyone was tired and ready for the weekend. The lessons came and went, and before I knew it I was on the bus back home, thinking about what I’d do over the weekend. Gazing out across the reservoir, I caught sight of one of the bottles from my nightmare floating in the water.

Time went by, and after dinner, I helped wash up. Mum wasn’t very talkative these days. She was diagnosed with anxiety issues after Dad left before I was born, and it all went downhill from there. At first she said “It doesn’t matter, at least we have each other”, but over time it got clearer that she had her own demons to face that she didn’t want me to know about.

I stayed up late that night, looking on news websites to see what was going in the world, when I saw the headline “YOUNG GIRL FOUND MURDERED IN LONDON, POLICE SEEKING WITNESSES” . I clicked on the link, and as if someone knew I was reading about them, the power went off, leaving me in the dark.

Anxious, and with nothing else to do, I went to bed, and as I drifted off, I saw a young girl, in a light blue dress, at my door.

Again, bottles were everywhere, and as I first thought, they were covered in red and blue labels. I did a quick check to my left and my right to see that the bottles were still there, and they were, stretching for miles and miles, an infinite line of containers trapping liquids within. I checked to see if my arms and legs were free, and they were, so I walked around. Again, I saw the faint outline of a figure, and I ran towards him.

Saturday mornings are usually great, but not this one. I had overslept and I needed to do work and chores. I went downstairs, looking for Mum. She was sitting in the corner of the living room sipping coffee slowly. I said “What do you need me to do today, mum?” She said “Sit down, son”. I sat down on a sofa opposite to hers.

“When I was younger, about twenty, before I was pregnant with you, your Dad and I were still together. It was the best time of my life, everything had a gleam to it, I saw everything in a better light. I thought this would last forever, but after a while he started getting violent. The moment he left for that bloody job in Slough that’s when things started getting horrendous. He beat me daily, and on occasions he threatened me with a knife. He said if I ever thought about telling anyone he’d put a machete to my face. After I got pregnant he left, without giving me any money or help. I nearly died having you son, I nearly died”

“Why are you telling me this now?” I said.

Instantly, she shot up and ran out the house, crying. I tried to catch up but she was already out of my sight. Dejected, I walked back upstairs, and booted up my computer.

Mum still hadn’t returned back yet. Sometimes when she couldn’t take it she’d step outside for a few minutes, but nothing like this. I called the police, and they said they’d look for her, but I couldn’t help but wonder where she was. There was nothing much I could do for now, and resigning myself to the situation, I got myself a microwave meal out of the freezer.

Sitting down with my meal, I turned on the television, loaded up the BBC news channel and started watching. Typical reports; Syrian crisis, NHS reforms, the usual, but then breaking news came through – the headline read: “TWO DEAD, THREE INJURED BY CHEMICAL EXPLOSION IN LUTON”. A dirty pencil drawing of the culprit appeared on my screen, I spilled my microwave meal as I realised the man on the television was the man from my nightmares.

I turned the TV off, and walked upstairs, grabbing clothes to have a shower. The shower was caked in rust, so having a shower was hard, but I managed. After getting out, I looked in the mirror, and behind me was the girl in the blue dress. I could clearly see her face, or what was left of it. There were no facial features, except for a rusty, diagonal gash covering her entire face. I heard a voice inside my head - a young girl, innocent and sweet, which proclaimed:

“...he cleanses us...”

Then the power went out.

I opened my eyes, bottles everywhere, purple with an orange-like label. I checked to see if I was restrained, I wasn’t, so I looked up. The shadowy man was still there, but he was running towards me at speed instead of standing still. In his left hand was one of the bottles, in his right hand was a rusty machete, dripping in blood. I heard voices in my head, chanting chaotically, getting louder and louder, reverberating against the walls of the void. I could make out the man’s face now.

I woke up.

I ran downstairs, wishing to see my mother.

In pieces. Her body was spread across the table, her torso intact, but with the arms and legs removed, and stuffed down the sides of the sofa. Her face looked as pale as the young girl, and the rusty gash was almost identical. I screamed.

Darting out of the house, I spotted cars sideways, strewn over the road. I looked inside, and saw the driver, with a rusty gash in face. I decided the best course of action was to run to the police station.

Bodies all over the place, with the identical gash I had previously seen. I looked around to find answers, but the only thing I could without blood on it was a bottle in the hands of an inmate. Suddenly, the inmate woke up, and started spraying wildly with the bottle. Not wanting to find out the consequences of being hit with the spray, I fled to the hospital to see if I could find medicine to help anyone.

The hospital was as desolate as the streets. I walked through a ward, which led on to a corridor that came to a junction. Finding nothing in the medicine cabinet, I turned around made way down the corridor.

The power went out.

When the lights came back on, a man, with the same gash as all the others was standing at the end of the corridor. I turned around, and saw three people with rotted limbs and chemical burns also sharing the same gash. As if they knew what I was thinking, they started to run to me, with the same pace and force as the man in the dream. Fearing for my life, I looked for an escape.

I saw a door labelled “Cleaning Closet”. I kicked it down, and looked for a place to hide. To my surprise the room was stacked full of the purple bottles in my dream. I turned around, and saw the four people standing in the door way.

Overwhelmed, I passed out.

I found myself strapped to a giant rusty tile, covered in blood, being carried along by twelve people in purple and orange robes with the same gash on each of their faces.

They were chanting – “Glass, metal, ceramic, stone”. Why were they chanting this? Was this my final hour? I remembered the showerhead, the rusty machete, the bottles, it all came together.

I was placed upon an altar, vertically, facing the twelve men in a semi-circle. In front of them was a pentagram made out of the bottles from the cleaning closet. The men chanted in an archaic tone, summoning a hooded 13th member, wielding a bottle and a rusty machete. He brought the rusty knife to my throat, and with what I though was my last breath, I shouted:

“WHO ARE YOU?!”

He pulled down his hood, revealing the first normal face I had seen in days, and took off his gown, revealing a light blue shirt, perfectly clean and pure. His face had the clearest blue eyes, and hair so smooth it could be used as a cloth. The man looked up at me and said:

“HI, I’M BARRY SCOTT”
