How about we get a local legends/folklore thread going?

I don't have a lot to contribute on the matter, but here in Southwest Michigan we have stories of Melon Heads. There's even a story about how if you go underneath a certain bridge and turn your headlight off they'll start beating the shit out of your car.

So what sorts of legends and folklore does your area have /x/?

I live in central Michigan, specifically Mt. Pleasant. And there's this old abandoned Drive-In, with a projection house and snack bar. They say, when you knock on the door of the projection house at midnight, it knocks back and a movie starts playing. But, the super scary part is the movie playing is just a bunch of spooky skellingtons dancing to a show tune. But you really get pee-your-pants scared when the door opens and then the spooky skellingtons that were on the screen start dancing out in a conga line. i did saw it once and i nevr looked at conga music the same

Ireland has the Hellfrie Club, located in the Dublin mountains, It wa sbuilt in the 1700's by SPeaker Connelly, the roof was built from the remains of a cairn tomb where the Club now stands. Apparently it caught fire and collapsed.

The legend most people know is about the traveller who comes knocking on the soor to the club one night, seeking shelter. Now, the men who took over the Hellfire Club were deuached decadents who did all manner of shit up on the mountain, away from civilisation. Now, they take this traveller in and everything is going fine, they're getting along. So, they're all playng cards and one man drops a card. He goes to retrieve it and sees under the table the feet of everyone present, including the travellers, whose own feet are a pair of cloven hooves. The man screams in fear and the traveller leaps into through the roof in a fireball, burning the place down.

It's now a burnt out husk sitting on a mountain, a favourite location for hikers and tourists and scumbags.

Best part is I can see it from my house.

Well, I live right next to Disneyland, so I can list off a few good ones.

There's supposed to be a ghost of a kid whose parents scattered his ashes in the Haunted Mansion, and now he lurks around in there, crouched in corners, crying.

There's also the One Way Man, who looks totally normal, just fat and with red hair; you can't even tell he's a spirit. He is only seen in Space Mountain. He often mingles with the guests in line, and he even gets on the ride. At the last tunnel you reach, he disappears.

There's two that I have living in the Waukesha/Milwaukee area of Wisconsin.
The first one is that one of the high schools in Waukesha (Waukesha South) has a large pillar of darkness that follows you around in the auditorium. They say you can see it from the corner of your eye if you're careful, but if you look directly at it, it'll disappear.
The second is at a graveyard also in Waukesha. I forgot the name, but it's the oldest in the area, just by a horse farm where I used to work. If you go driving past it at night, there's a car that'll follow down the road for some time before vanishing. This one I've seen before, and was creepy as shit.

We have a 'cry baby bridge' bit of folklore in my area, but that's about it.

We used to have an abandoned house a few exits down on a place called "Red Mill Road" where a guy had gone crazy and killed his wife then himself.

It was there for years, we actually went through it a few times at night. It was essnetially an old mill house, 4 rooms with a bathroom addition. Old, 1800's construction. They eventually tore it down and build a shopping center or a church or some BS on the site.

That same road used to have a KKK hanging tree from back in the day, apparently. I live in GA, so that thing is actually kind of common, stories of hanging trees and such, that is.

We never had any truly paranormal experiences at any of the three sites, aside from people trying to hype it while we were there.

Bunch of people just up and fucking disappeared without explanation. One of them was an old guy on a bus. People fucking saw him get on. People talked to him ON THE FUCKING BUS. But when his stop came, he just wasn't there.

Seriously, that fucked up my shit for weeks when I hear about it. Refused to go south of Rutland for months.

I live in Michigan, in the Rochester / Oxford area. We've got this cemetary with a really old ivory sign and crumbling tombstones, way off in the woods. You have to drive on miles of dirt roads to get there. People claim that its haunted, and glowing balls show up in pictures all the time there.

Lots of story variation, but pretty much a newlywed couple crashed on this hilly road(the road is called onondaga hill and any resident can tell you the roads are obnoxiously steep and winding) and the dead bride hangs out by the road and fucks with drivers, idfk.
When I was younger some of my friends went out there one night to see if anything was spooky but shit's unexciting. A lot of people around here though totally believe it for some fuckin reason

I know what you're talking about, and I can handle that. Mostly because there's a fucking monster to blame. But with the Bennington Triangle, there was NO FUCKING EXPLANATION. There was no common denominator among the victims, just a similar manner of disappearance. Only one body was ever found, months after the extensive search; it was only as decomposed as a body would be after a few weeks, and it was found in a flat field, which had been combed carefully, and would have easily been sighted months earlier.

Fuck, I'll take mountain hillbillies over something that never left a trace, hands down.

I live in a small medieval town called Hitchin. Bunch of haunted locations in the town that are quite famous within the local community, the school I went to (Hitchin Boys School) actually has a ghost there as well. In the maths corridor is supposed to be the ghost of an old headmaster who killed himself. Sometimes when the school play was on we'd dare eachother to go down the corridor in the pitch black at like 10 at night.

One theory is that years ago panthers and shit were imported as luxury pets and that some of them escaped their owners house.

Actually just moved to Brooklyn, it's funny how different the "feeling" you get here is. There are lots of places in WI (I lived in Appleton) that give you a genuine creepy feeling as you walk past. Mostly due to the dark and the fact that the woods can sound creepy.

Here in Appleton there is a fountain on land owned by an insurance company. Apparently a little girl drowned there years ago, and if you walk past it at night, you can hear her screaming and sobbing.

My friends lived right next to that land. We tried to go but the company has security and they're generally bitches about it.

Here we have an almost mythical being called Pishtaco.
It is an old andes native person that practices black magic and that kills people to steal its fat. Yeah as in your lard. He attacks in the night, disappears in the air, doesn't make sounds in the night.

That's the legend though. The real deal is that this Pishtaco being is just some regular people that are in fact murderers of tourists. These people often kill lost tourists and besides stealing from them their belongings they sell their fat to the black market. They carry long dark ponchos and hats that cover their faces and underneath the poncho they carry a large variety of knives. They don't have supernatural powers obviously

I live in Bremerton, Washington. There is a road about a mile and a half away from my house named Holland Road -- I have to bike down it every morning, usually just as day is breaking, on my way to college. I forget the whole tale of the road, but it involves an actual car crash which killed someone and a horse from a long time ago. I'm sure of the story's legitimacy, but I don't remember why. I think I saw the news re-release of the original news article or something. Anyway, like I say, I bike down it five days a week and heard plenty of weird shit. I'm not even that into paranormal stuff either, so I'm not a sucker for these types of stories.

There's a rather large mountain that separates the area in which my mother lived from the rest of the county. The local legend is that a headless horseman-type character existed at the top and would chase people all of the way down the mountain.

I only found out about this because my mother told me the story of how, as a teenager, she hit a garbage bag with her car. The garbage bag actually hung onto the car part of the way down the mountain and it freaked my mom out.

I heard a woman ran into a gas station by the woods where the devil has been seen sometime during closing hours, if you know the area its a long road towards the shore points surrounded by forrest. She said the devil was chasing her and to call the police but the attendant refused to open the door, chalked her up as insane and told her to go home. After a while she was reported missing. The gas station attendant must feel guilty for not helping her.

People spot-lighting for deer, mentioned seeing lights in the house and the originally transparent windows taking on an orange hue. Scariest stories though come from the coal mines. We've had lots of mining accidents here in the past, and the actual stories of what happens in those accidents are--if ghosts are creatable--sufficient to cause hauntings. Had a miner who came to our school to tell us about the trade talk about a recent accident where a few miners got trapped by a cave in. One of their buddies had his legs crushed by the rocks that fell, so he bled out legless while they waited for help. The hauntings supposedly go back as far as the early 1900s; people hearing mining picks chipping in abandoned mines, screams, people walking through the tunnels when no one's there, shadows, you name it.

I honestly don't know any offhand, but I heard something about this little abandoned grist mill on a little trail near Independence Boulevard that they supposedly found a pair of skeletons at. Supposedly they haunt the trail and people have seen them walking about. I can't say whether they do haunt the trail but I know that I see very few people on that trail during the day and that place is creepy as fuck during the night. There's also little place just down the road from it that everyone insists is some Satanist church and they do rituals and shit around some little lake near it.

Where I live in NH, I have seen / heard strange things, but noone really talks about it. Though one ghost that a lot of people know about is said to be in one of the local college's residence halls. Huntress Hall was built in 1926, it was named for Harriet Huntress who worked in the state office of education. In her later years she had to use a wheelchair, and this wheelchair is still in the hall's attic. Harriets ghost is said to roam the attic and fourth floor of the hall, and people have heard the wheels scraping against the floor above.

At the University of South Carolina, there was supposedly a giant man with three eyes ("Third Eye Man") haunting the catacombs, but they've been sealed off so no more sightings of him. The green room of the the University's theatre was supposedly an infirmary/morgue during the civil war, and people report all sorts of spooky shit down there (crying, banging, drafts, lights going out, etc).

At Olympia Mill (turned into apartments), people supposedly hear children crying at all hours of the night and feel like they're being watched. The owner of the mill used to work children to death (fair bit of rumored sexual abuse as well). Had a buddy that moved out of there because he swore he heard children in his living room. Cornell Arms apartments are also supposed to be haunted after a resident jumped out of a window to commit suicide.

On the Congaree River Bridge and also at the Gervais Street bridge, a ghostly hitchhiker will ask for a ride at the beginning of the bridges and if you let her in, she will be gone as soon as you reach the end.

Fort Jackson is supposed to be super haunted as well. Shadowy masses that follow you, the ghost of a woman who committed suicide (she will ask you to touch the bullet hole in her head), whispering in the barracks, etc.

One of the high schools is haunted by one of the old principals. You can hear him walking acros the auditorium stage at night.

I'm sure there are more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

There was a legend that floated around when I was in high school of a young couple who had a baby, but didn't want it/panicked and they took it and buried it in a barn. I was told that if you drive past that area at night, you can hear a baby cry - and I did.

There's a place here in town called: The Mill. During Halloween it's a prime place for the FEAR FACTORY Haunted Mill. Rumor is that the third floor of the mill is haunted; The story goes that a man his wife and daughter had lived on the third floor, this had to be early 1900's, but it is said that a man broke in and killed the wife and raped and beat the little girl almost to death, but before she did the father had come home and found the his wife and then the man, they basically attacked each other and killed each other, what they didn't know was that the little girl was in the closet and saw the whole thing and not even feeling life was worth it she hung herself above the stairs.

During the Fear Factory deal every Halloween, they close down the third floor because the people were getting hurt and the electricity would spark or cut on and off. So they cut it off, including the electricity to the third floor.

Someone I knew who worked there claimed they were out ((at night)) in the courtyard very once in a awhile this one window the light would come on, and twice I and a few others saw what looked like a little girl in this window.

Cedar Grove Cemetery, the only one I know about this, there we're rumored flashing lights of white and purple. But I've seen black shadows dart between the trees and the headstones.

There's a local College by the name of Cumberland University that's haunted by two ghosts...

The first ghost is said to be that of a young man who died here many years ago. Campus legend has it that long ago there was a young student who was waiting for class to begin in Memorial Hall, in either room 301 or 302. He was sitting on a window pane. He leaned back against the window, but it gave way, and he fell three stories to his tragic death. It is said that today his ghost still walks the halls of the third floor of Memorial Hall. Many people describe an uneasy feeling they have there when they are there alone at night, though this probably isn't all that unusual in such an old building. No one knows when this incident occurred (there is no record of it), but the story has been told for years, possibly as early as the 1940s or 1950s, perhaps earlier.

The second ghost is said to have appeared much more recently than the first one. In the mid 1980s, there was a science teacher at Cumberland. He was teaching a late class one night, and began to experience some sharp pains in his chest. After class ended, he had a very difficult time getting down the rather steep steps of Memorial Hall. When he arrived home, he suffered a heart attack and died. It's also said that his ghost now wanders the campus of Cumberland University, especially at the horrendous steps (which are a workout to climb) where his heart attack began.

Around here in the Metro Detroit area I don't know of any deep-seated local legends or folklore but there is a cemetery near my neighborhood (St. Johns on 14 Mile) that just feels very off.

From Massachusetts here, so much lulzy shit happens in Salem it's amazing. They have hilariously strict curfews there around Halloween because so many dumbasses try to stir shit up. Some legit paranormal stuff happens there though, plenty of crazy witches around making stuff interesting.

I live in a really small town that's predominantly built upon Native American graveyards. Most of the people here are actually mixed with Native ancestry, but that's beside the point.

There's a place near here called Oyster Bay. It's a street known for having plenty of haunted houses. A few acquaintances of mine actually had a seance at one of the houses.
Bad idea.
One of the girls present had her hair catch on fire without any candles even being near her head. When they asked the spirit what they wanted, the ouija board apparently spelled out the name of one of the people there. Don't know the legitimacy of this story, but apparently when they were driving away from the house, they saw something crawling in the bushes surrounding it. They said whenever the thing moved, it made a cracking sound. Like bones breaking.

This house is right next to a stop light, where kids often drive up and turn off their engine. The legend states that if you do so, and place your keys on the dashboard, a spirit will show up. A friend of mine did this, and something seemingly ran up to the side of his truck, smashing into it. He and his buddies gave in a drove off after that, but he swears he continuously heard growls and the like for the rest of the night.

Another story revolves around another friend's house. She grew up there. Apparently the house used to be a doctor's office in the olden days. When she was little she'd tell her mom she saw a man making funny faces at her, apparently to make her laugh.

Another time she tried to jump out of a window, and when her mother asked why, she said "the little boy told me to do it."

Other weird things would happen, like their neighbors asking who "the man upstairs was". They'd been seeing a man look out the upstairs window often. But they never used the upstairs at all.

I also know a girl who lives in a house down the street from me. The man who lived in the house before her had died before her parents bought the house. The man had gone boating and drowned. He was pronounced dead at 10:10 pm. For the first few years the girl and her parents lived there, their phone would ring every single night. At 10:10 pm. When they picked it up, all they ever got was static. Still creepy though.

I know these aren't really legends, just kind of local "stories". They aren't very scary but they're fun to tell in the dark.

It's for sure haunted. Or at least there's some really weird stuff going on there. It's been around since the 1870s I believe, but fires way back when destroyed some of the buildings. They were rebuilt though.
There's tunnels underneath all of it, and going under Anna too. I've been in them, once, only because I was admitted into the hospital. The tunnels were extremely small and cramped, you couldn't stretch your arms out all the way and I could barely stand upright. They had rooms down there meant for lord knows what, there was all sorts of screwed up things that went on there in years past.
The whole place for a long time was self sufficient. Its own electricity, food, basically everything it needed it produced, by means of basic care. There's a graveyard not too far from most of the buildings, decently big. Oldest gravestone was so eroded you couldn't read it, but it was back in the 1800s.
Anyway, the nurses had some stories about some haunted happenings. One of them said there was a headless nurse who'd float through hallways into walls, he claimed to have seen her himself.
When I was there... I'll describe the room I was in. It was fairly big, with four beds in each corner of the room. It was separated in half by two rows of wooden lockers. The side opposite to the bed I was in always felt... bad. Just bad. I had a really weird feeling the whole time I was there. Wasn't pleasant.

There's also an abandoned hospital in Carbondale a little ways off of Chautauqua rd. called Sunset Haven. Went there not too long ago, stupidly in the middle of the night. I can't say anything on if it's haunted or not but I can give a bit on its history. At first it was a poor farm, then made into a nursing home in the 1940s. In the 1950s the local university, SIU bought it and used it for animal testing. It closed down in the 1970s. It's surrounded by graves, something like 86 in total, some unmarked. I didn't go in but it's pretty much like any other abandoned place. Filled with graffiti saying stupid shit like turn back and all that. I can get a few pictures of the inside if people are interested.

Grew up in Eastern TN (Johnson City / Elizabethton /Gray)
My grandma told me when they lived up in the mountains there was a half horse half man thing around. She said when it came around the farm animals would all freak out, and once it came up on the porch when she was inside, but she was too afraid to look out since she was pregnant at the time and she believed that it could "scar the baby" (?). Her 12-odd brothers and sisters have had different such encounters as well. It's an interesting local legend.
I'm in Asheville NC now and don't know of much, aside from a bridge where a lady hanged herself and weird shit is supposed to happen. Haven't looked into it though

In my town we have a witch's grave. Apparently if you go up there at night you hear babies screaming and crying and it gets very windy.

Also we have an old abandoned shack behind the community pool in the woods, it's haunted by the Plant Man. A green figure who will bury you alive if you try to go inside. He'll watch you secretly if you go near.

Another one was some mysterious black dog named Bear. As a kid me and my friends would shout his name before embarking on an adventure and he'd always be there within 5 minutes. A huge black dog is an excellent companion. n
No one knew his owner but he would always come if you called his name in town. He vanished when I was in middleschool and I miss him a lot.

My grandma had another story about it, she was in the cellar canning some stuff for winter and there were ground level windows. She said she heard the animals freak and saw the centaur thing's hooves pass by the window. Said it was fairly large, like Clydesdale size. I never got around to asking her more about it; she unfortunately passed away a few weeks ago from cancer. I may ask her brothers/sisters but I don't really talk to them that often.

Grew up in Long Beach my whole life, only thing worth noting is the Queen Mary which I'm sure most people have heard about.

The ship has been used both in WWII and as a luxury liner, and has had almost 50 reported deaths from both WWII and when it was just a cruise ship. Also during the war to avoid enemy detection she accidentally cut through another ship and sent all of it's passengers into shark infested waters. They say you can still hear banging on the sides of the ship of the passengers trying to come abord.

The most haunted room is supposidly room B340, I'm not sure why, you're not allowed to stay the night there (the ship is still used as a hotel) and the only way to go in is with a ghost tour I think, I don't know for sure.

Another haunted area is engine room 13 where a young man was apparently crushed to death while trying to flee an engine fire. They said you can hear knocks and such down there, and sometimes the door to that engine room is hot to the touch.

Used to think it was bull shit growing up, but I was helping my aunt on a job there (she worked on the show Ghost Whisper and they were filming there) when I was like 15. After they were done filming they wanted me to go collect all the trashcans they had used for the crew in all the hotel rooms they booked (which was like a whole floor, don't remember which floor though). The whole floor was empty except for me, so I went to doing my job but the whole time I kept getting a strange feeling I was being watched. They were the big kinda trash cans and they weren't in every room, so when I found one I'd just pull it in the hallway so someone else could help me carry them out after I found them all. I was in the last of the rooms after finding like 10 to 12 cans when I heard loud foot steps in the hallway, like someone was running down it very quickly. I thought it was maybe one of the crew guys who had forgotten something so I went out to look and saw no one, just all the trash cans which were now all stacked at the end of the hall where I had started.

I ran to find my aunt after that, crying saying I wanted to go home. She called me a bitch and told me to go get the trash cans. So I asked a nice crew dude to go do it cause I was scared as fuck. Haven't been there since then, I've been wanting to but no one is every willing to go with me.

Also heard Jennifer Love Hewitt saw some shit when they were shooting in engine room 13 but I don't know the details on that.

I'm also a Disnelyand castmember and have some interesting stories about there, but I'll save them for later.

Maltby Cemetery is the closest I've gone to visit; really, really spooky atmosphere: long, dark roads surrounded by trees with no headlights and shit. Took two visits and a lot of walking to finally find the right place. When we finally did and I got the balls to go in, it was pretty lackluster. Walked for quite a while, never found the cemetery or the graves. Part of this might be because my friends got scared and bailed.
Honestly, the most frightening part was that the guy who owns the neighboring house would come out and get pissed at us. Really wish we'd found the actual cemetery, but, of course, the dumbasses who came along "didn't think we would be long" and had to go to a party. Just fucking pussies who didn't want to admit they were scared.

Anyone know anything good up in this area to check out?

Those are the main things but like all places we have our fair share of supposedly haunted houses and whatnot.

She then asks in the reception about this lady and everyone claims not to have seen anyone like that to enter or leave. After that, the guide identified her in an old picture as one of the first ladies that lived there. She then quit the job.

There was this small community built out in the woods in the 60's or 70's by hippies that eventually became a small village or sorts.
Apparently a crazy person butcher the whole village of about 13 people and buried their bodies in the woods.
The crazy person is said to still possibly live in the small "village" known now as the Troll Village because the crazy man has been described as about 7 feet tall and deformed to the point to look like a troll kinda.

Well me and my friends have been there once and it was a series of small burned down houses and huts, some houses were intact and the big barn was in tact so we explored those but nothing really happened when we were there.

Ok, I called up my gramps to ask him about the location. Their house was on Elmer Reece Rd., Carter, TN 37640. Elmer Reece was my great-grandfather and the road was named after him. The centaur supposedly lived up on Pond Mountain to the south of the lake, when you're looking at the area on the map. It's deep in the Cherokee National Forest.

I used to be a haunted Asheville tour guide, and we actually have a fuckton of local legends. Shadows jumping from buildings downtown(ironically there's now a huge target in the brickwork on the sidewalk below that building now), haunted bars where supposed demons will shove you off barstools, nazi occult activity, a mass murder(actually only 5 people and a dog, but that's "mass" enough for us) whose victims roam the streets, a nun and her unborn child's father who haunt a church and the courtyard in front of it, abandoned tunnels under the city that were supposed to be a subway system at one point, a woman in a pink nightgown who haunts our most famous inn(I actually met her when I was younger), and a old haunted jail where an ex-sherrif commited suicide.

Pic related, it's the Basilica St Lawrence. The architect was entombed there, and his ghost is said to haunt around outside.

Around holland I know my uncles pulled the melon head prank around the woods by felt mansion. Asshole brought a gun and they stopped. There is also another story of a zoo and mental hospital on the felt mansion grounds. The biggest thing I've seen up here is UFO's. You see them all the time. I've been chased by huge flashing lights in the sky tons of times. Rumor has it a huge red UFO was seen right over the Syracuse power station right before some big countrywide power outage back in the 60's/70's.

It's just called Haunted Asheville Tours by Joshua Warren, I've heard the haunted LaZoom tours are pretty cool too, Kinda put a comedy spin on things, have people in ridiculous costume act it out and stuff. Never went on one, but their tour overlapped ours so we got to see their performances.

The tunnels are mostly used as underground coolers/freezers for the local businesses now, but some of it is linked to the masonic temple(which if you ever get a chance to visit, I'd highly recommend), and sometimes it'll cause massive sink holes in the streets downtown. There's a few "rain gutters" that you can see a down into the tunnels a good 15 feet. I'm pretty sure they all conjoin under the Vance momument (built to honor the 33 degrees of masonry. 2spooky)

Also forgot about the Battery Park hotel muder. a 19 year old girl was brutally stabbed with a letter opener and it ended up getting blamed on a black guy. Figures. His last words were "I did not kill that girl." Everyone who lived during that time says it was the hotel managers "not right in the head" nephew.

My dad is a mason so I may have gotten special treatment, but I'm 99% sure the new haunted asheville museum is in the temple, and they take you to it at the end of the tour. At least they did when I was a guide. The place is amazing, it has a really old fashioned elevator, with the slide cage door and everything, that still works, and they have a huge round theater room, as well as a 3rd story balcony that overlooks downtown. The building was all made by hand, and there's a library with pretty much any religious book you can think of in it, as well as a bunch of civil war relics and other old timey things. I also got to see the sword that they used(and still do) to protect the meeting hall when it's in use. The hall itself is pretty sweet too. Tons of different religious flags, and an alter containing different religious books.
