But the grotesque and odd nature of the fairie stories here have caused me to be quite interested over the years, as well as my own experiences.
One of the well known stories, is of a girl from an outport (fishing) community, who ventured into the woods. Her grandmother dressed her up that day in a new red dress, with nice large brass buttons going down the front. Now, most Newfoundland folklore is very over the top, and jovial - stories of squids attached end to end, stretching hundreds of miles, and cod fish so bountiful, you need only dip a bucket in the ocean to fish. However, this story is downright fucking creepy.
The grandmother warns the girl, that the Fairies live in the forest, and to not go near a Fairie stool (a group of mushrooms) while wearing that dress, as Fairies LOVE shiny metal. The story concludes that the girl was found 2 days later, stumbling out of the woods naked, with her red dress gone, and the brass buttons sewn to her chest. She allegedly never spoke again
