How long until artificial intelligence is just intelligence, growing of its own accord? Is that when a soul is born?
What about plain computers? Wouldn't that make causing a computer to crash to be torture?

AI does not imply a soul. However, Alan Turing himself once said that humans really have no idea whether computers have a soul or not. And if there is an all powerful god (lol), then there is nothing that prevents him/her form giving a sentient soul to an AI program/device.

Interesting thread, but maybe should take it to tech (/g/).

I think it belongs quite well on /x/... /g/ isn't much for philosophy.
If a computer, or artificial intelligence, hypothetically had a soul, it'd make sense... Really, people(and all other things) are biological computers that are extremely advanced.

Had to summarize his paper on computer AI for my philosophy class. The guy was wordy but had some interesting ideas. Basically he said it would be entirely possible to program a computer to the point where it could fool someone into thinking that it was human. But as for wheter it has a soul, to me it waould have to be self aware first.

Except that our brains don't work like computers. Our brains designed computers, and we can think of our brains as being like a computer to help conceptualize what our brains are doing, but it's not really a computer. Fact is, we don't even really know how the brain works. Not entirely, at least. Similarly, if we actually understood what consciousness itself is, and what makes anything conscious in the first place, we could answer your question about computers having souls (or awareness, or sentience, or whatever). But we don't know, so we can't.

AI will never be equal to human intelligence.

We have an imagination. We can dream. We tell jokes, we cry (sometimes for no reason), we can learn new things without having to be taught.

Computers will always be nothing more than extremely complex, highly efficient, blazing fast calculators at their core.

I don't think human intelligence implies a soul, seeing as how there is no such thing as ghosts. What makes us different from a computer? We have evolved alongside millions of other species, for billions of years. We could be considered highly evolved machines, but we are an integral part of the universe. We are in tune with life all around us, and our relationship with the universe is infinitely deeper than any man-made machine could achieve.
