He pulled up to a stop-light, which happened to be unusually long. However, John was not frustrated, his casual air resulted in his complete ignorance. He changed the dials on his radio as he waited.
"Hey buddy, help a guy get outta' the rain and into Portsmouth?" an incredibly average looking man, sporting a raincoat, jeans, and sneakers called to him from the sidewalk.
"Hey sure, going into the city myself." John opened the door. The man walked briskly to the car and sat down and buckled just as the light turned green. "So how goes it friend, can I get your name?"
"Grant."
"Like the general?"
"Not quite sure, parents were never really clear with the meaning of the name. Guess it's just a name that any northerner be expected to have at any given point in history."
"Well, I find it quite refreshing. Don't really hear Grant used as a first name nowadays, though I don't really hear it used as a last name much either. I don't mean to insult or anything, I just found it interesting."
"None taken, thanks for picking me up; most people just blow right past me. I must be menacing or something."
"Hey no problem, anything for a fellow man, and sometimes you never know when a complete stranger will repay in full." John gave a seemingly benevolent smirk, as if a gesture of friendship toward the man sitting next to him.
"I'm not quite sure I heard your name."
"John."
"Well it's nice to meet you John, though I can tell you now that I probably won't be doing YOU any favors anytime." John shared a laugh with Grant.
