During the summer of 2003, events in the northeastern United States involving a strange, humanlike creature sparked brief local media interest before an apparent blackout was enacted. Little or no information was left intact, as most online and written accounts of the creature were mysteriously destroyed.

Primarily focused in rural New York state, self proclaimed witnesses told stories of thier enounters with a creature of unkown origin. Emotions ranged from extremely traumatic levels of fright and discomfort, to an almost childlike sense of playfulness and curiosity. While their published versions are no longer on record, the memories remained powerful. Several of the involved parties began looking for answers that year.

Three years ago, I had just returned from a trip from Niagara Falls with my family for the 4th of July. We were all very exhausted after a long day of driving, so my husband and I put the kids right to bed and called it a night.

At about 4am, I woke up thinking my husband had gotten up to use the restroom. I used the moment to steal back the sheets, only to wake him in the process. I appologized and told him I though he got out of bed. When he turned to face me, he gasped and pulled his feet up from the end of the bed so quickly his knee almost knocked me out of the bed. He then grabbed me and said nothing.

After adjusting to the dark for a half second, I was able to see what caused the strange reaction. At the foot of the bed, sitting and facing away from us, there was what appeared to be a naked man, or a large hairless dog of some sort. It’s body position was disturbing and unnatural, as if it had been hit by a car or something. For some reason, I was not instantly frightened by it, but more concerned as to its condition. At this point I was somewhat under the assumption that we were supposed to help him.

My husband was peering over his arm and knee, tucked into the fetal position, occasionally glancing at me before returning to the creature.

In a flurry of motion, the creature scrambled around the side of the bed, and then crawled quickly in a flailing sort of motion right along the bed until it was less than a foot from my husband’s face. The creature was completely silent for about 30 seconds (or probably closer to 5, it just seemed like a while) just looking at my husband. The creature then placed its hand on his knee and ran into the hallway, leading to the kids’ rooms.

I screamed and ran for the lightswitch, planning to stop him before he hurt my children. When I got to the hallway, the light from the bedroom was enough to see it crouching and hunched over about 20 feet away. He turned around and looked directly at me, covered in blood. I flipped the switch on the wall and saw my daughter Clara.

The creature ran down the stairs while my husband and I rushed to help our daughter. She was very badly injured and spoke only once more in her short life. She said “he is the Rake”.

My husband drove his car into a lake that night, while rushing our daughter to the hospital. He did not survive.

Being a small town, news got around pretty quickly. The police were helpful at first, and the local newspaper took a lot of interest as well. However, the story was never published and the local television news never followed up either.

For several months, my son Justin and I stayed in a hotel near my parent’s house. After we decided to return home, I began looking for answers myself. I eventually located a man in the next town over who had a similar story. We got in contact and began talking about our experiences. He knew of two other people in New York who had seen the creature we now referred to as the Rake.

It took the four of us about two solid years of hunting on the internet and writing letters to come up with a small collection of what we believe to be accounts of the Rake. None of them gave any details, history or follow up. One journal had an entry involving the creature in its first 3 pages, and never mentioned it again. A ship’s log explained nothing of the encounter, saying only that they were told to leave by the Rake. That was the last entry in the log.

There were, however, many instances where the creature’s visit was one of a series of visits with the same person. Multiple people also mentioned being spoken to, my daughter included. This led us to wonder if the Rake had visited any of us before our last encounter.

I set up a digital recorder near my bed and left it running all night, every night, for two weeks. I would tediously scan through the sounds of me rolling around in my bed each day when I woke up. By the end of the second week, I was quite used to the occasional sound of sleep while blurring through the recording at 8 times the normal speed. (This still took almost an hour every day)

On the first day of the third week, I thought I heard something different. What I found was a shrill voice. It was the Rake. I can’t listen to it long enough to even begin to transcribe it. I haven’t let anyone listen to it yet. All I know is that I’ve heard it before, and I now believe that it spoke when it was sitting in front of my husband. I don’t remember hearing anything at the time, but for some reason, the voice on the recorder immediately brings me back to that moment.

The thoughts that must have gone through my daughter’s head make me very upset.

I have not seen the Rake since he ruined my life, but I know that he has been in my room while I slept. I know and fear that one night I’ll wake up to see him staring at me.

Nadja doesn’t make it. I turn at the steps of the bunker and watch as the artillery shell lands on the shattered street between us. I hold our daughter and watch my wife smolder in the crater, deaf to the thudding concussions around us. Someone grabs Inna from my arms, thrusts cold gloved fingers in the neck of my jacket, and pulls me back into the black throat of the small shelter. I see my last glimpse of Leningrad’s cracked and wounded skyline, and then it goes black. The door slams shut, screeching steel and spinning locks clattering in rhythm with gun fire. I finally find the voice to scream Nadja’s name.

Inna is crying in the dark, cradled by the last of Svetlana’s daughters in the small entry way. I suddenly find I have no knees and I am on the floor with a hot choking hand around my throat. Boris and Grigory slide away from me in the darkness, I can hear them averting their gaze, necks scratching against thick coats as they twist away from me. I thrust my tears into my gullet and gag, retching and heaving up the thin watery remains of my last meal. Inna needs me, and I need strength.

The rosy cheeked boy that led our last charge, all ill fitting uniform and tilting helmet, doesn’t have the grace to leave me be, and puts one soft hand on my back. I shrug him off, and stumble to my feet. In the slowly seeping light of his oil lantern, I see his face and his fear, and I look away. He backs away from us, turning down the long dark featureless tunnel ahead. Turning back, he surveys the dozen survivors before him, shivering and broken. The short run from the grand ballroom has taken its toll on our weakened bodies. The last of the ratty birds in the hotel’s eaves had been caught a week ago; a chorus of hollow sunken eyes now stare back at the trembling child clutching a rifle.

There are two distant impacts that shake the concrete walls, dry showers of dust drift in the hazy light. The soldier looks to the roof in the ensuing silence, and then he looks at us with a determined, frightened, grin, like he might speak. There will be power, he will say. There will be food. There will be guns. Inna and I will live.

The third impact is a hammer in my chest and blinding light flares down the tunnel. The expanding sphere of light and fire sends a blast of rocks and bent iron rods down the tunnel. The lantern is smashed by a fist sized lump of concrete, plunging us into darkness, but not before we all watch the young man break apart under the streaking rain of stones.

There is a long ringing silence, the blackness around me throbs in time with my pain as I drag myself across the small room towards Inna, whose desperate screams slowly penetrate the fog. Svetlana’s girl, her name forgotten now, is dead, but Inna is unblemished, only filthy and terrified. I swoop her into my arms.

Svetlana and her daughter are gone. The soldier is dead. Boris is dying. I can hear a trio of other voices in the dark. Anya, still dressed in sodden nurse’s whites, Grigory whispering goodbye in Svetlana’s cold ear, and little Mikhail, his breath even and still.

The other refugees are dead, I know. Some, my neighbors for years, some having only just joined our convoy on it’s half kilometer flight from the approaching German line. All are bleeding in silence on the floor, their breath stilled

Inna tucked beneath one arm, I feel out my way across the wet floor towards Boris’s fading cry. I feel across his chest, hand feeling the warmth of the wound, a great gaping indentation. I grip his hand. He is twitching now, limbs spasming and stretching away from the dying body.

“Borya,” I whisper in the darkness. “Borya, be still.”

Boris gasps once, and for once, my brother takes my advice. I hear the last sigh of his breath a moment later.

Grigory will not leave Svetlana and his girl. While the butcher weeps over his family, Anya and I grope blindly down the tunnel in search of light, food, help. Inna and her cousin, Mikhail, hold hands and whisper in the gloom, and I keep the sound of their little voices in range as Anya and I chart the surroundings by touch.

A long, thin hallway, a low roof. Bare bulbs in metal cages. No light switches, no doors. There is a gaping crumbled hole in one wall a dozen meters down, the shattered rock still warm. The buildings above have collapsed, filling the shell’s entry hole and blotting out the light. There is a cold, damp breeze drifting from the hole, but no floor can be felt on the other side, no sense of size or scale, just emptiness and a quiet breeze. We continue, tripping over the rubble for another 50 meters. Nothing. There is no telling how far the hallway goes. We turn and retrace our steps in silence.

We cannot go back the way we came, of course, even if the metal door were not bent and jammed against the hinges. The echo of artillery and gunfire continue. Once for a brief moment, we hear the footsteps and barking orders of the Hun. When they pass, the concussions die away, and we are alone in the silent dark, with our dead friends.

Grigory and I carefully take each body and stack them in one corner in a neat pile. This is familiar work. At last, we lay flat against the floor, drained by the day and surrendering to the night. Inna is curled tight against my side, and Mikhail on the other. We sleep heavily, sinking into thick fog.
 I wake to strange sounds, a ripping sound, like wet sheets being torn. I drift to wakefulness, panicking momentarily at the forgotten darkness. As I rise to stand, something moves, its passage through the air swift and nearly silent. I can hear soft padded feet galloping down the hall. My heart is frozen and I stay perfectly still.

After long hanging moments of silence, I cross the room on all fours. The neat stack of bodies is toppled, and there are new and ragged tears across the thighs and chests of the first of them.

I wait for the others to awake, and decide to tell them nothing. I dreamt the thing in the dark, the bodies scattered. That’s the only solution. A vivid dream born of trauma and exhaustion. I could check the bodies to prove it, but I don’t need to, I tell myself.

When they are at last awake, we start down the hallway in a chain, one hand on the shoulder of the person in front. I lead us past the gaping hole, still breathing cool and wet. Anya and I drag a hand across each wall. We make a torturous slow pace on Grigory’s badly wounded leg; he has hidden it from us until now, like the fool that he is.

As the hallway stretches on, we encounter only locked doors. Hundreds of locked doors, evenly spaced and inscrutable. When we reach the end, it comes as an undignified and simple wall. Anya starts to weep a little, and Grigory curses before sliding roughly to the floor. Mikhail and Inna are silent; I imagine their little eyes hollow and glazed now, no longer able to accept the unending madness.

“Well?” I inquire. “Where now?”

Grigory laughs, a familiar and joyous sound. We have no food, no water, no weapons. We were already dying, starving, before we made our desperate flee from the advance of the Hun, and we quicken the process it with every breath. We are trapped in the dark, alone, entombed. There is little to do, the effort to speak seems so pointless. I squeeze Inna’s hand and she presses against me.

Sleep comes quickly in the stretching dark, and none of us are awake to hear it take Anya and Mikhail.

I come awake to their groggy shouts of confusion and the heavy sliding fabric of bodies on the concrete floor. Behind these sounds, a familiar soft padding footstep turns my blood to ice. By the time I am on my feet, only the high waver of Anya’s voice can be heard. I shake Grigory awake, taking handfuls of his filthy coat collar.

“Grigory,” I bark. “Take Inna’s hand...”

He is nodding, I can feel the coat tugging against my grip with his assent. I lay my daughter’s soft pudgy hand into his, and move away from them, tracking only the fading echoes of Anya’s screams.

I move, hand over hand, down the wall, counting cold metal doors as I go. By the time I lose count, I have reached the gaping artillery hole. The cool draft brings the hair on my neck to attention, and curdles my blood. I hear nothing but the echoing swirl of the wind from below. I feel my way around the edge, arm dangling in the yawning emptiness. The edge is slick, and wet, and even as I smell the blood, I think how dry and parched I am. The thought is pursued by a shiver of revulsion. It takes me a very short while to admit to myself that I have no intention of going in the hole, and I find my breath again.

At the entrance, the stack of bodies is scattered into a field of broken and marrowless bones that crack dryly underfoot. The door remains useless, mangled and twisted. I think of Inna, waking in the dark without me, and I turn back.

But it’s in the hallway ahead of me.

It’s moving away from me. This comes to me in a wave, and hits me like a physical blow.

It’s moving towards Inna.

I have cleared the field of bones before I have time to be afraid. I trust my memory and leap over the debris from the explosion, toes cracking painfully into loose slabs of rock, spilling forward and tumbling. I am running now, sprinting in pursuit with my lungs burning and my wasting muscles screaming. It moves effortlessly ahead and away from me in the darkness, and I carom off the walls, scraping flesh from my forearms and hands.

Inna is screaming in the distance, Grigory is barking broken and ragged curses. Their cries make points on the map in my mind, and I surge forward in one last push of my crumbling body.

When I am close, when I hear the thing biting deep from Grigory’s neck, hot lifeblood coursing to the black floor, I turn my shoulder and tense for the impact. I throw myself forward, colliding with the hunter in the dark just as it stands to meet me.

It is cold and naked, its skin like marble, bones and angles sharp as knives. It squeals and hisses with the impact and I struggle to throw my arms tightly around it. Thin, powerful limbs thrash like snakes beneath me, but I burn my body to squeeze tighter, and drag it to floor.

It kicks and squeals, a sound like a rabid animal. I reach my hand up up to it’s hairless throat and squeeze. It jerks and seizes, whip thin muscled limbs battering my body and crushing ribs, and it snaps it’s jaws at my hand, but I hold fast.
The throat makes a cracking noise, like a cascade of little pops, and I dig in my fingernails and tear.

It spasms now, blindly flailing for me in the darkness as its ruined throat leaks onto the floor. I collapse as one knobby limb strikes me and I crash to the floor. My body is slowly winding to a stop, and I can do nothing but listen to the thing make pitiful noises as it shudders and dies.

Inna is at my side now, little hands digging into my shirt and shaking in the dark. I hold her tight to me, feeling her protruding ribs and spine. I slide my sore and bruised body across the floor to the thing, ignoring the burning protestations in my limbs and back.

I trace my hands across the corpse, slowly sketching the picture of a what could only be a man. Small, compact and powerful, his cold and hairless skin cover tightly coiled muscles. His joints are hard and bony, his limbs seem just a little too long. His face is a pinched mask of rage, but unmistakably, human. In his mouth, his teeth are filed sharp.

Beside me, Inna has joined me, and she traces her small hands across the thing’s face. I don’t have the strength or the will to stop her. She pulls her hand back in shock at the sharp little teeth. I can hear her opening and closing her mouth, working out the words.

I began having problems with my old apartment right away. During that time a variety of occurrences happened randomly sprawled over my time there.
I noticed first that the thermostat would go to max or the way off. I would come home and heater would be running. I chalked it up to my roommates. My alarm clock would suddenly go off at 333 every night, without fail. Finally, when my roommates had gone, I set up a digital recorder. On the tape, was a female voice saying "you killed him, oh my god! Help me!"
Once I was in my room, sleeping when I woke up and saw shadows running in the other room. I took my phone, hit record, and in ten seconds, caught three figures. No one was running in front of the door.
The next time I recorded, I waited for my roommates to be out again. I set it to dictate, and reviewed it the next day. To my horror, a mans screams filled the tape. He screamed as if he was being tortured, and though my roommates deleted my tape after skipping out on rent, I still remember every scream and every word. After the man stopped screaming, another deeper male voice said "scream again- oh Lord-" it was said so matter of factly, and the man continued screaming, it was too loud to destinguish the other. He screamed for another minute before it died out. Then a womans angry voice came over "don't wrap your hands around my throat! Get Out! Get Out!" the man started screaming one last time, and the tape cut mid-scream. I have more stories of either ghosts, demons, spirits and other crazy shit if you want them.

I remember this creepypasta from a while back, this guy was trapped in his room and couldnt get out. He took a chair to his window and the window would not break, he smashed into the door relentlessly and could just not get out.
I remember vaguely that he saw the eye of a giant peering into his room and when he finally got out his world had turned into a post apocalyptic wasteland.

No matter how many keywords I type in to get this story nothing ever shows up.

There was also one where a guy moved into a new apartment and there was something in the closet in his spare room. Every night it was reach out further and further until one night it fucked with him too much and he left.
God I wish I remembered these stories...

There's a memory that i'll carry with me forever. I used to try and tell myself that it was a dream, but I've given up on that; no dream could ever be so vivid, or shared by so many. My friends were lucky, to be able to dismiss it in the way I never could. But the reality of what happened in our elementary school's attic, will never loosen it's grasp on me.

Back when I was 14 years old, I was going through that point in my life where I thought it was my duty to rebel against authority. I wasn't the only one though, all of my friends felt the same way, though I didn't have many of those. Eric (the fist) Knukkel, Tim, Raj (dirt face) and our favourite Tom-boy: Sophie. Sophie was our leader, though no one ever said so, it was just something we all knew and accepted. I had a crush on her, but I would never tell her; she'd have thought I was soft or something.

No one had ever reported hearing the puppets 'talk' like with most children where they assign a voice for a specific toy, which they speak themselves. The girl always appeared to listen, but it was figured that she heard the responses in her head. That changed on this day.
Now, it is argued that perhaps the girl was a natural born vantriliquist, but Miss Tessa, to the day she died, swore that what she heard couldn't have possibly come from the little girl's mouth. What she reported hearing, were two voices, each appearing to come from from one of the two puppets, one high one low. And they were both speaking in tounges.
At that point, Miss Tessa became incredibly frightened and fled down the stairs to the third floor. When she reached the bottom step, the screaming commeneced.

The screaming was blood curdling, but Miss Tessa couldn't muster enough courage to go back up on her own. She looked frantically for another staff member, and eventually found one of the custodians, Mr. Clarke, to whom she quickly explained the situation.
The two of them both rushed up to the attic, but when they were about halfway up the stairs, the screaming came to a sudden halt.
They were paralyzed for a moment, then continued at a slower pace up the stairs. What they saw has been the subject of controversy for all the years to come.
The razor thin strings of the two puppets had somehow wrapped around the girl's wrists, severing her arteries. She lay face down in a pool of her own blood. Perhaps most unnerving of all, both Miss Tessa and Mr. Clarke agreed upon what they saw next; The two puppets were sitting up neatly on the girl's back, with their strings in their hands.

It wasn't too hard to get in. We waited til night time, all of us supposedly at the movies (that's what we told our parents), and met on the old jungle gym. We kept our flashlights off, until we were 'safely' inside the basement, via the old fire exit, propped open courtesy of Sophie's dad's crow-bar.
It was much colder in there than outside, and none of us could keep from shivering. I managed to keep my teeth from chattering, and encouraged the others to do the same. The sound of bones on bone was somehow unnerving in our current location.
Our trek through the school was an uncomfortable one. Every noise would nearly make us jump out of our skins, and in a building as old as that, there were noises aplenty.
The fear of getting caught wasn't very heavy on anyone but Raj, who we had to convince several times not to turn tail and run. It's almsot surprising, looking back on it, that no one noticed our flashlights in the windows. It was only around nine O'clock.

The second pupet burst out into a high-pitched, maddening cackling.
I wanted to turn and run for the stairs, to get the hell out of of there, but I was frozen in place. We all were.
The puppets continued towards us, now less than a meter between us. Continuing to speak in their horrible voices. Continuing to cackle like madmen.
Tears were streaming down my face in warm rivulets. The seemingly impending touch of those puppets alone was enough to break years of acting like a tough-guy. That was over. I just wanted to be out of there.
Something managed to break us of our stasis though, and just on time. The little girl seemed to break free of her trance, errupting into ghostly tears and yelling at us to run, to get out of there as fast as we could.
That was all the convincing we needed.

I saved some pictures from a pretty epic post about how back in the early 1900ish family's would take pictures with the deceased. I don't remember the back story, but there were pictures I never saved. Like one of a dead man standing, held up with this metal thing around his waist. Very eerie, but most pictures are of dead children.

The last storm was already on the horizon when I woke that sunday morning. It hung in the south, a solid black wall of dust, churning and seemingly motionless. I’d every intention of sleeping late into the morning, as had been my Sunday custom since Adele and the girls had left, but the distant rumbling and crackle of lightning drug me from the bed just after sunrise. I shuffled drowsily around the farm in the early morning, lashing the doors of the barn, rounding up the two stubborn hogs, and shuttering the windows; but soon I found myself rooted in place, captivated by the writhing shape in the sky. It stretched impossibly wide across the open sky, rolling across the border from Nebraska. The air had a dry, electric chill, and already the sickly yellow wheat swayed in anticipation.

I was in a trance, eyes locked on the distance when I saw a small light dust plume to the west, picked out in stark contrast with black beyond. The horse and rider at the base of the little dust devil approached the farm at a sharp trot, and my dust bleary eyes registered the silhouette. Carl Jordan had owned the farm next to mine for as along my family has been in the Dakotas, I grew up with his great booming laughter warming our home nearly every night. His usual broad, yellowing smile was absent beneath recently trimmed mustache and broad rimmed black hat; his dark suit was blotted with fine layer of grit that he brushed absently at.

He turned towards the south, to the storm and sucked loudly on his lower lip. After a few moments of thought he sighed deeply, with a phlegmy rumble.

“The Hattersons are dead. All of them, ‘cept Saul.” He said evenly, not returning his gaze to mine. I drank this in for a moment, feeling the insides my sinuses beginning to burn in the cold and arid breeze. I briefly dwelt upon the image of the youngest Hatterson, a tow headed toddler with the dim looking smile I’d seen at the general store with Saul and Molly a few days prior.

“How?” I asked finally. He grimaced slightly, still gazing south.

“Mattie’s fine,” he said after another silent moment. “Just a little ill this morning, thanks for asking.” He broke from the black clouds, and fixed his eyes on me. He offered a pale imitation of his familiar smile, but his eyes remained squinted tight, haunted. He looked as if he had more to say, but at last, he just nodded and gathered the reins.

“Be safe, Eddie,” he said, a phrase worn smooth by repeated use, and turned towards his farm, trotting quickly, head still crooked towards the storm.

By noon, I could only watch as the it reached up and blotted out the sun.

I did my best to ration the allotment of bourbon I’d poured off that morning, watching the black wind scour the earth through a broken shutter slat. During the storms of the years before, pale and weak compared to this tempest, Adele would huddle with the girls to read scripture, inevitably ending with the Revelations in hushed reverent tones. I’d tried not to scowl at her fear and awe before, but now I could feel a little tremor of doubt in me, as I looked out at the sackcloth sky.

When the sky darkened a few shades at nightfall, I prepared a small meal of bread and fried eggs, and drained the rest of the bourbon. Later, I laid in the unmade bed with the world spinning, and the sky howling outside and tried not to think.

The storm raged stronger than ever the next morning, the sun winking through the maelstrom, a fat circle of hazy orange like a fading coal. Late in the day, it showed no sign of abating and I resigned to leave the house, if only to feed the animals. I tied my goggles to my head, and a damp bandana around my mouth, but I still gasped at the ragged burn of the dust when I stepped outside into the storm. The lining of my throat seemed to crack and bleed within moments.

The dust had seeped in everywhere, and the hogs and cows were covered in a layer of grime. “You need to come with me!” he shouted over the storm. The dust between his teeth had formed a thin black mud that flecked at the corners of his mouth. It was his tone, flat and even, that terrified me. I didn’t argue, but pulled on goggles, and offered him a second bandana.
I followed close behind him, one hand on the horse’s haunch. Carl picked his way down the path, navigating by some uncanny memory of the curves in the little road. We walked cautiously and deliberately west for the better part of half a mile, past Carl’s own farm, towards the leaning shape of the Collins farm. A throbbing dread began to stir in my breast as we approached.

Saul Hatterson, hands clasped around a little revolver, looking for all the world like he’d been dead for a week. Saul Hatterson, grinning obscenely wide, showing dried black gums.

“We should head into Pickton to tell someone, but I- I need you to drive the Collins’ Ford. I can make it between our three farms on foot reliably enough, but I don’t think me or that horse could make it all the way into town.” Carl looked mildly embarrassed, hidden as he was behind dust and beard, and I followed him to barn.

“Eddie, I don’t know what this means,” he yelled to me as we crouched over my tractor, the sky dimming. “But I think I’d appreciate it if you stayed with me and Mattie tonight. The storm has to let up in the morning I’m sure.” I could see at last the spark of fear in his eyes, and it brought me a little solace.

When I woke gripping the gun and empty bottle, the sky was lighter, but the whirling black cloud still surrounded the world on all sides. Tuesday. I thought through a fog of pain. Or is it Wednesday? I groggily allowed the shame to flood in when I realized I’d left Carl and Mattie waiting all night.

After finding all the water drained the night before, I dressed for the storm and headed out to the well. The pump handle strained against me as I pressed downward bringing up the first sounds of water. What came out of the pump was black and viscous, a thin black paste. I dropped the tin bucket in disgust, feeling yesterday’s dread igniting behind the alcohol ache, and I turned quickly towards Carl’s farm.

On the road, with my destination not yet visible, I turned to see behind me. There wasn’t even the faint outline of my barn. In that moment, I was alone, surrounded by a wall of vibrating earth and wind all sides. It could have been all of creation and I would never know. It could be the end of creation, and I would never know. I turned back towards Carl’s farm and began to run in a panic, frantically hoping I had not altered direction.

My mind spun trying to make sense of utter madness, and it stoked the fires inside me; panting, desperate dread flooding my limbs until I found myself propelled blind, running through the storm towards my home.

The shuffling footsteps stopped in front of door, and I saw the wood flex ever so slightly as pressure was applied. A scraping sound began to rise, hissing, from the small barricade as it began to slide slowly across the floor. The force on the other side of the door increased slowly, steadily, grinding against the heavy barricade until the door was open to the storm and to the night and beyond.

It had moved halfway across the room now, shuffling towards me, the malevolent sparks of its eyes locked on me. The now-familiar dread reared up to swallow my temporary peace.

Thin tendrils coiled, and tightened, and wound their way through air, twisting towards my mouth and nose. I could feel them caress the raw passages of my lungs, hot, twisting and unmistakably, horribly, alive as they slid into me.

Close to half a year ago, someone on /x/ posted a story about "Mole People", I was a lurker back then and did not contribute or post mainly out of concern for my identity. Yes, even in an anon board, people find ways to identify people. The thread was gained some notoriety and 404’ed at somewhere close to 250 get. It was archived on 4chanarchive.org for quite some time before it eventually 404’ed as well. I’ll do some digging, I may have the thread saved somewhere on this computer. If I find it, I’ll post the thread in its entirety at the end of mine.

Several years ago, I worked for the NYC MTA. Working for the custodial department is just as you would imagine it to be. A “shitty” job but allowed for much more access to various places that normal civilians would not see. All under the guise of cleaning after NYC, I was granted access to some of the deepest and darkest parts of the city. And believe me, cleaning up after New Yorkers is not an easy task.

I haven’t worked for the city department in ages so I feel it’s now somewhat safe to share my personal accounts and experiences.

And let’s not kid ourselves, I did not choose this profession. It was something I simply picked up. My past did not allow for such luxuries as working in an office or business environment. When I was younger, I hung out with the wrong crowds, did some bad things which eventually led me to where I was back then, a janitor of sorts.

Anytime from roughly 8am to about 3am the following morning there are various cleaning staff travelling the subway systems cleaning up after visitors and New Yorkers, from time to time there would be requests for certain “cleaning” tasks at a specific station. But for the most part, a “cleaner” is designated to his or her station. I was mainly stationed by downtown Manhattan, which in my opinion was probably the dirtiest of all the stations. It’s not mostly the adults that would leave a mess but rather the kids, so either in the mornings when school started or when school ended, the kids from the nearby high schools and elementary schools would leave gum, spit and whatever else behind making a big mess. You’d think my main complaint was the hobos or the drunkards who pissed or defecated on the floors but those aren’t regular occurrences. For the most part, people acted civil.

During the time between school hours, very little was asked of me. This allowed me to roam the tunnels or visit fellow workers in other stations. On a few occasions we’d talk about the various encounters we had with hobos, catching a few sneaking into the subway stations and sometimes onto the tracks. Or the odd places they managed to find shelter deep within the subway tunnels. The term we used was, “mole people”. I’m not really sure who coined the term but between 1994-1997 some lady by the name of Jennifer Toth wrote a book called, “The Mole People” and even before that books and films depicted the notion of people living underground. Either due to loss of jobs, homes, etc... In 96-97’ there was a documentary that came out called “Dark Days”, it was mostly about homeless people being interviewed underground.

Considering the size of Manhattan and its history there are estimated to be up to hundreds of various tracks that were either abandoned due to lack of funding or re-routed for more optimal routes. Believe it or not, Grand Central Station does in fact house a vast tunnel that once served as an escape route for various dignitaries. I’ve never been granted clearance to access it. However, I have cleaned up and worked with others in smaller abandoned tunnels and stations.

Back in 1995, I was asked to join three fellow cleaning crews to clean up a station that was sandwiched between the 1 and the A train. You’d never see it from the trains but it was definitely there. Because of its location, the crew and I could not access the station via a train, we walked the tracks only after a coordinated meeting was held and conductors were informed not to take that specific track.

Not many people know this but MTA has its own security team. They’re there to serve and protect the people working in the MTA but for the most part they are the equivalent to RaC(rent-a-cops). For the next 30 minutes everyone in the station stood in silence trying to comprehend how on earth someone could end up in an abandoned station. When the RaC arrived, he had his pistol drawn and entered the dark chained off section of the station. It seemed like minutes went by until he re-emerged with two people in handcuffs. The characteristics of these two people were almost impossible to describe.

They were both dressed in what seemed like 60s’ attire. One of them a male, who had suspenders and what appeared to be once a pin-striped trouser. His hair so long that it masked his jaw line where his beard was. The other, a woman who was wearing a dress so tattered that it was beyond recognition. They were both young, probably in their teens. The RaC said that he found these two hiding in the dark staring at the exit as if they were expecting to attack when he spotted them.

Needless to say, we left the station. Some internal investigation was put into excavating the area. Whatever was discovered was never disclosed to us. It was also around the same time that my three fellow co-workers were reassigned to LIRR(Long Island Railroad) stations. So I hardly saw them again.

There was a site a while back that actually documented a few of the hidden or forgotten underground tunnels of NYC subways but I can't seem to find it right now. I also can't seem to dig up the old "Mole People" thread that was archived a while back. If I find it, I'll post it.

Keep in mind, NYC has a rather interesting history when it comes to subway tracks, new ones are built and forgotten and sometimes re-routed for optimization. So it's not implausible that there are stations that are left unattended and/or mismanaged. I've seen a few in my days but there are certainly a lot more that I haven't seen.

Not long after the incident, while all the people from the original cleaning crew were transferred to other stations. I continued working in Cortland Street station. I’m not exactly sure why, but that’s how the city was managed. No one brought up what had happened again, and neither did I. Least not with anyone who wasn’t there.

I did manage to meet up with a Michael once or twice when I was crossing into Long Island from the city. We’d have lunch and talk about what had happened. Michael knew more than I did, apparently his superiors put a hush hush on the incident. No one was to talk about it with anyone. The two “people” that were found. Had no identification and there were no records of these people. Supposedly, they were sent to some asylum somewhere. Something about being “delusional” and suffering from malnutrition and mental issues. I was told that it was best not to talk about it.

Working in Cortland Street station had its perks, mainly I had the freedom to really roam around and get the lay of the land. I managed to figure out from the New York City library that there were pictures and some forms of blueprints available for some of the older tracks. Having a “loose” schedule of which trains went where, I found myself the opportunity to do some tunnel exploring.

Late one evening, I stepped onto the -[Redacted]- Station tracks and started walking, by all accounts(at least according to an old subway map), there should be an abandoned station that led to a longer much narrower passageway that once served as a means to haul munitions and other various materials for the government. Armed with a flashlight, some paracord, a film camera and a map I managed to locate this corridor. I narrowly missed becoming another janitor’s problem when one train passed me almost head on.

I figured it was only a matter of minutes before the conductor notified the station manager so I figured the only way I’d be able to keep my “shitty” job was to haul ass and make a run for the passageway. Being a planner has its advantages. For one thing, I plotted out all the escape routes need to exit the target site without being noticed. So I continued on my adventure and made my way through the passageway.

What’s strange is that after you go down a certain amount of depth, the noises stopped. At one point, I was quite mystified that even the trains couldn’t be heard. The further down I went the hotter it got. Having brought a camera, I wanted to document what I had experienced and seen, but without a decent flash most of the images came out blurry at best. It did however manage to scare away the half dollar sized roaches that were just about everywhere. Each time I flashed the camera, I’d hear loud hissing and see the roaches scurry in all sort of direction. My boots were pretty much covered in sludge and roach corpses. But it became really hot, to the point where I had considered taking off my shirt. But the thought of roaches scurrying all over my body quickly discourage it.

Further and further I went, until I started to hear what sounded like pots and pans clinking one another. It literally stopped me dead in my tracks as I tried to figure out what it was. But each subsequent step I took, the clinking would grow louder and louder. Suddenly I had realized, I somehow managed to snag a line onto my backpack and it was triggering the noise. I stopped to examine it when out of nowhere, I a shadowy figure almost glide right past me. The only way I could describe it was from some Japanese horror movie where the ghost passes behind the main character unbeknownst to him. It literally scared me to my core.

That’s when I hauled ass back where I had entered from. I eventually made my way onto some tracks but they were definitely not from ----------- Street station. I had somehow ended up by Fulton Street station which was at the very least a several blocks away from my entry point.

When I got home, I tried to calm myself and try to recollect what had happened. The more I thought about it, the more I came to believe that I might have set off some primitive alert system. Set up by whom? I couldn’t be sure. But the MTA definitely wouldn’t use pots & pans to string an alarm of sorts.

I’ve told no one of this story, only to a very few close friends and family.

This is the last week I’m going to keep myself locked in this prison of endless repetition. I have all my affairs in order. I’ve written a note to my family and provided for everything and everyone.

In case I get senile, this is a typical morning in my life on a normal day.

I wake up at five thirty on the dot because my bones have internal timers in them, and my hip catches on fire at around five thirty four. I take a swig of mouthwash on my way to the toilet to save time, and I spend a three minute stretch swishing Listerine through my mouth and managing to squeeze out inconsistent bursts of urine. I’ve had to prop my hand against the wall since I was fifty. Standing straight up to piss is beyond me these days.

My third young trophy wife Margerie can only make decent eggs over easy, and sunny side up is out of the question unless we go out. The bacon is microwaved for two minutes and thirty seconds because although her rack is perfect, she can’t cook to save her life. She spends every morning breakfast session explaining to me that my children from previous marriages are ungrateful and deserve to be cut out of my last will and testament. This all comes while I’m chewing spongy bacon and drinking cofee that tastes like engine oil.

By seven thirty, after I’ve shit, showered, and shaved, I’m in my boring Saab, puttering twenty minutes to work on economy cruise control. This twenty minute window is the highlight of my day. There’s no traffic, the morning show I listen to is sometimes funny, and I take my first valium as soon as my rear tires hit Nutwood Street.

For the record, my life was once gritty and unpolished, but also glamorous in a way that it was poetic. I miss being piss poor, living paycheck to paycheck, and not knowing what the next day would hold in store. I miss my first marriage, when everything was new, including some positions that I can’t do anymore because my fake hip would crucify me with pain for trying. I miss my 1970 Oldsmobile 442 that got six miles to the gallon. It was a one fifty five big block with a superstroke and a twelve second ignition top out. You felt like you were going to die if you lost even a smidgeon of control on a country road.

I was young then. It all comes back to age.

Old people all go out the same way. Heart attack, stroke, brain aneurism, cancer.

I usually sneak a second valium in for the morning meetings, and I smile and nod more than anything else. I make Jana feel like her ideas are good, like the employeees actually care about what she has to say. When we break for lunch, I use my hour to go to one of five places.

I can’t go anywhere the costs more than eight bucks. I made one hundred and sixty two thousand dollars last year, but Margerie doesn’t put out for me if I eat expensive food without her. She IS a trophy wife, after all. My choices are always limited to the Taco Bell Pizza Hut two in one, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, or the China Spring. The best deli in town is open before three, three blocks down, and I get to eat there once a week when our meetings cut short. There’s no telling how many pastrami and loogie sandwiches I’ve had, courtesy of Jana’s rambling motor mouth.

When I get back from lunch, Jana is always gone, and I spend three hours walking around the office and telling my employees how good they are at their jobs. The truth is, some of them really ARE good, and they know they deserve a raise. I have to tell them that I need more out of them because Jana is too much of a tightwad bitch to pay them higher salaries. She saves the extra cash for botox and the newest Corvette every year.

No matter how good my day at work is, it ends in absolute frustration. I live eighteen miles from my office in the city, but in five thirty traffic, it takes me ninety minutes to get in to my driveway.

For such a long time, it was a smooth, hard stone, not unlike something you’d pick up out of a creek and throw through Jana’s front windshield. It’s been that way since I was ten.

When I was young, this town wasn’t much more than a church, a gas station, and a diner. I rode my Schwinn to service on a normal Sunday morning.

He wandered in after the offering prayer, and I know most of the Methodists thought he was a homeless vagrant, sliding from town to town with three handles of whiskey inbetween. He wasn’t.

He pulled me aside behind the cemetery graveyard in broad daylight before I went home because my folks weren’t at the service that day. Everyone talked and gossiped and I got plenty of warnings about talking to strangers afterward, but he was different than anyone I’d ever met. He didn’t have much to say, and he had to be at least a hundred years old, but one thing sticks in my mind, seventy one years later.

To this day, I truly have no idea where my wife takes that money, or what she does with it. I’ve never asked, and I never will. This is possibly why I’m in my third marriage, but the intensity in life that I crave does not come from prenuptial feuds and accusations of infidelity. With each new drop, I saw the lives the stone had consumed. I could only guess which ones were victims of the old man who possessed the artifact before me, or how far back the lineage of sacrifice went. My homeless vagrant was last, and her stomach still had a gaping hole in it. She gnashed her teeth and tried to lash at me like a demon, but the barrier of the circle impeded me from harm.

If I’m going to be alive forever, I need some form of companion, and Margerie won’t cut it. She’s a terrible cook. The term I’ve coined for the accuracy and power of these rituals is “necropotence.” The sacrifice, the environment, the time of night —- these are all factors that determine the extent of your success.

These small details could be the difference between your body evolving in to an eternal medium for the dead, or shaving decades of wear and tear off of your lifeline. The line I walk is so very thin. I’m lucky I didn’t unleash something by mistake when I was younger. Sasha turned out halfway good, and halfway possessed, but at least she’s not human. If she becomes dangerous, so be it.

All spirits serve me now.

I’ve realized that this power makes me greedy, and I’m ashamed to say that it feels wonderful. I won’t relinquish this for anything.

When I got to work, I quit on the spot and told Jana I hated her more than I hated her old man.
