You should just have a good time doing it, and not really worry about the outcome.
When sculpting clothes, I tend to use myself as reference. I pose in the same way as the intended sculpture and see how my clothes fold and such.
When doing figures that's not supposed to go into jars, I make armatures out of wire, as a kind of skeleton. You will pretty much have to do this if you're going to make arms and legs and such, since the Sculpey isn't that sturdy on it's own.
This image is actually my first attempt at a "real"/serious sculpture. And my first attempt with Super Sculpey. Was a blast to make.
