Most people don't care enough to read good writing, or listen to good music or enjoy art in general. They want something that doesn't take work and makes them feel good. We've already done the work, and we want something of higher quality and lower accessibility.
I think it is our job to reconcile good taste with accessible writing. The author created a banality, but it is not the end of the road; it can serve as a starting point for people to work upward to greater things. I know when I was 12 I was listening to angsty music and reading a lot of Stephen King, but I evolved because people helped me to find better things. Without this starting point, this angst-ridden, inarticulate, banal garbage, I would not be where I am today.
