[1285891801] Grilled cheese at school

No.8994 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I've been considering making a grilled cheese in the morning before school and bringing it. Any tips to keep it fresh and not soggy? I have a thermos, but I'd have to cut it in a weird way to fit it.

[1357712394] Food Donations

The holidays encourage those privileged with abundance to donate to others in need. Why is it inevitable that we always choose to donate that 12 year old can of spotted dick?

What canned goods do you donate?

[1107353537] International House of Pancakes

Imagine if IHOP were truly international.  What pancake style dishes would you see from other cultures?

Japanese:  Okonomiyaki, would be great for lunch/dinner menus.

Jewish:  Latke, a fried potato pancake.  There are several other Jewish pancakes, crepes, etc.

Ethiopian:  Injera, a spongy "teff" pancake that serves as the plate for various foods, and is torn off and wrapped around the food as it is eaten.

Cous Cous:  Tiny semolina grains make this dish, similar in texture to grits.  Often topped with meats and vegetables in a wide variety of styles.  Popular in Africa, South America, and the Middle East.

[1107353162] Toy prizes- where have they gone?

No.2 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Remember when cereal boxes used to come with cool prizes?  Now they seem to be either watches, CDs, or some mail order merchandise.  Where have all the cool prizes gone?

I'd love to see the "toy and candy" snacks seen in Japan.  You'd get a little plastic figure on one end and a packet of gum or chocolate balls on the other.  It made the snack seem more permanent.  You could display your figure as a sort of trophy for eating that snack.  All forms of licensed kid friendly anime make their way as snacks, or at least rice toppings.

[1107352446] Japanese food that is overwhelmingly awesome

Unfortunately, Japanese food in the US has been stereotyped as "Oh, you mean a Teriyaki Bowl."  Yet there is so much more, most of which isn't seen unless you go to a Japanese supermarket.

Okonomiyaki- Sort of a lunch or dinner pancake.  Varieties include beef, shrimp, vegetables, etc.  Sadly, I've never seen a US restaurant serve this.
Sukiyaki- Almost like flat plate fondue.  Cooked beef, vegetables, mushrooms, clear sukiyaki noodles.  You can eat the stuff over rice or dip in raw egg with soy sauce- just make sure you have non-salmonella kind.
Mochi- A chewy rice cake wrapped in seaweed and dipped in soysauce.
