I have a Canon EOS Rebel T2i already, but there are situations where its better not around. I have a unique list of requirements I would like in my new camera. I want a point and shoot, that can fit in a pocket, water proof, and shock resistant to a certain degree. Just a camera that can go anywhere with me. I will be shooting in pools, the rain, concerts, amusement parks, and generally anywhere and everywhere. Keep in mind, Id rather have it be less user friendly if I got better quality pictures.

Good for you. Don't tell us this boring story. Go to Best Buy and tell the clerk. Or Target or Wal-mart. Tell them about these requirements. They will help you out. Now leave the photography board. We'd like to discuss photography.

>The main thing I find is my camera tends to blur whatever isn't the immediate focus of the picture. Is this to do with the autofocus like I suspect, and what can I do to fix it? This part is a little complicated. The region that is in focus with an optical lens, is a spherical shell from the eyeball outward. Everything within 2 to 3 feet being in focus is a common effect. The width of this region is called the depth of field. You want more DoF and you have a narrow one now. The range is defined by the lens aperture, which you've got at 3.5, which means wide-open. It's good for dark rooms like that to be more wide open. But then you lose the ability to far-focus. I'm afraid there is no fix. What you must do is use a longer exposure , or brighter light. They both mean more light. In the sunlight you can use f/8 and get more stuff in focus. Indoors like this, you should use a tripod and long exposure. maybe just setting the camera on something sturdy and clicking timer mode will get a stationary shot. That way you can expose for as long as you want, use whatever aperture you want (f/6.3 or f/8 would be better for your purposes) and get a clean shot (lower ISO). If you cant use long exposure because the subject moves (people or animals) then we're stuck with making the light brighter. Big flashes. But now youre seeing by the light of the flash. Youll want one bigger than a quarter inch. hard edged shadows are caused by point light sources. If the ceiling was all white, there would be no hard shadowing. That's why I like to point my flash at the ceiling and light the room instead of the subject.

>>1255334 Thanks, I just took a better pic than what my camera's P mode was doing with that.
So with more light I can get more stuff in focus whilst maintaining the wide open aperture like you said? Either way it's better than what I just took, so cheers

>>1255273 >write 4 pages of how it makes me feel I take it this is for some kind of class? When they ask you to write 4 pages about a photo as unimaginative and unremarkable as this one it's a pretty big hint that all they're looking for is some mindless metaphysical bullshit. Just make something up. Anything at all, it doesn't even have to make sense. It makes you feel like puppies, because you used to have a puppy that you'd take on walks on a dirt road just like that one. Whatever.

Yep so my Pentax K-x took some liquid damage. I was using a backpack to carry it around and I placed bottle half filled with oasis juice in the bag. The lid wasn't on right and basically soaked errything in the bag. I don't think I've ever been this angry with myself. I took out insurance when I bought it but I'm still looking for the receipt/insurance form thingy. Does anybody have any advice about what I should say on return? Or any way I can fix it myself? The lens is fine I think. I think its the electronics that are fucked. I tried drying it out without batteries in and when I try to turn it on all I get is a 'Battery depleted' message, I've tried new batteries. Fuck this sucks.

if it was water then it might have a chance. sticky stuff, no way. insurance might cover it. if not, really no way to save it other than extremely invasive procedures usually. if insurance won't cover it, probably best to look for another used body and sell that one for parts/non working on Ebay. Some fucker will always pay too much for a broken one hoping to get lucky. next time get a used k10d/k20d/k7 or a k5 - they are all weather sealed. got my k10d for like $350, and sealing has proved useful in the rain, but it has also saved its ass once from just exactly what you described happened to you.

hey /p/ not quite sure if this is the right place to post this, but i'm a film student looking to get a camera. I don't have a regular camera or a film camera and i'm tired of having to book cameras from the school and all the paper associated with it (we use canon xh-a1's which I'm not too fond of anyway). Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, as I've read that they are very good for not only still shots but also video recording. I have ~$3500 AUD saved up so far, and it would be nice to get a camera that can also take still shots as well. I'm just wondering what would be a good choice. all advice appreciated

I used the canon 5d mk II for a film project recently in the studio... It was really nice but as I wasn't used to filming with that camera (first time properly), I did struggle a little with minor issues (the lighting in live view completely changing after I pressed record, so I had to record to see what I was doing when changing the lighting, I wasn't sure if I was able to change the depth of field, wasn't able to correct colour balance on imovie so I probably should had done it in camera...) Do remember that as well as the camera, you need to pay more on top for the lens, and you won't be able to use the cheaper EF-S ones. You need to think carefully about the lens you want, in terms of perspective, but as you're doing film it'd probably be best to have a versatile zoom lens than several primes, but that's just me.

I use my 7D with a 24-70 f/2.8L and a 70-200 f/2.8L and the results are awesome.
Also, don't forget mic packs and lighting.
I remember when I had my 550D and I was hell-bent on getting the best glass and I forgot about mics, lighting etc

Get a panasonic GH1 or GH2, and don't come to /p/ for video advice, because /p/ knows JACK SHIT about video. Literally nothing. Last time they adviced someone wanting to buy a sony camcorder to buy a DSLR. They're photo camera people.

Face it, it's not just a fad. When will you make the switch to 3D?
Anonymous
What I still wonder is, why would I want to use 3D as a composition tool? Macro photography would be a cool thing to do, but other than that, I can't think of any other type of photography which would benefit.

I don't know, the mijonju person acted like a total fucking tool on digitalrev. Yet I looked at his channel and apparently he owns an M9, D700, and more than one nice camera in every format. I don't know if that should make me rage more or less.

I kind of raged because he doesn't look like he knows what he's talking about. He'll start explaining something, and then stop because he isn't sure what he's explaining.
Also I can't stand how he edits every other word in his videos. Can you seriously not compile one fucking sentence in a single take?

>>1255064 There's a difference between having lots of money to spend on cameras and actually knowing what you're doing. Look at some of his videos about large and medium format. He's not a retard but he's not exactly the most knowledgeable or skilled guy either.
Most importantly, though, is that his videos are just really, really boring. I think it was neat that he actually took off the plate on the M9 and showed most of its features, but besides that his videos have long and shitty slideshows and he goes on and on about really pointless things.
