When looked into with any sort of depth and breadth, all of the various facets of the universe fit together into a cohesive whole. One needs to get a solid perspective of things for it all to make sense internally and thematically, and for any deeper appreciation to take root. Granted, there are still some aspects that are wonky and the in-universe explanations are essentially kludges, but those are influenced not by the ability (or disability) of writers, but rather the fact that this is a science fiction universe derived from a tabletop game, one focused around ham fisted attempts at balance and aggravating marketing decisions.
